well, the end of an era is set to kick off this sunday night on amc. the wildly popular 60s drama series mad men premieres its seventh and final season. our diane sawyer has a look behind the scenes and inside scoop. reporter: here s how it began with this face, don draper, self-inventedm glamorous like america in the 60s. and behind closed doors cracked by secrets of a punishing depression era childhood. he s played by jon hamm. he s damaged goods in many ways, and he s doing the best he can. reporter: he strives, he drinks, he is brutally careless with women. are you alone? reporter: like his partner roger sterling. when god closes a door, he opens a dress. reporter: and every character in the prism of the ad agency in the 60s sprang from the imagination of its creator matthew weiner. i don t judge. that s been the secret of the whole show.

he lives in simpler lodgings. doesn t wear the famous red shoes. what s remarkable is he was man of the year both for time magazine but for the gay publication, the advocate and which basically said they quoted someone who is gay and searches for the lord and has goodwill who am i to judge. is that the overriding message who am i to judge? is that what he brings with him? i think what you see is if he can t judge, the pope who can. that means nobody can judge. he said you can t be people who judge. you have to be people who approach what christ would do. kroi christ was compassionate. this pope said you re not about judging that s god s job. that s what he s trying to do. we ve seen it over and over again washing the feet of women on holy thursday. again breaking a barrier and not only that a muslim woman. so i think what he s saying this is where the church needs and
