(Reuters) - A mobile air-launched rocket system to be used in Britains first domestic satellite launch could sow the seeds for a globally dispersed rapid-response capability to put extra eyes in space in times of war, executives and analysts said.

But the launch is also seen by many as a blueprint for quicker launches of limited satellite capacity for tactical military purposes, in what planners call "Responsive Launch". "Ukraine woke up the world in a lot of ways," Virgin Orbit Chief Executive Dan Hart told a news conference in southwest England on Sunday.

The ambition is to turn the country into a global player in space — from manufacturing satellites, to building rockets and creating new spaceports. But can the UK carve out a place in an increasingly crowded market — and why try to reach for the stars?

How exactly will the launch work, what is being fired into orbit and could humans one day travel to space from Spaceport Cornwalls Newquay Airport base? MailOnline has all the answers.

The first orbital rocket launch from Britain is about to blast off - but it's just the start for the UK's race to space.

The UK's Virgin Orbit is confirmed to be in preparation for its upcoming first orbital launch with the "Start Me Up" mission.
