The German police on Wednesday announced the arrests of eleven suspected members of a criminal syndicate from Nigeria, the Black Axe, during nationwide raids, DW reports.

German police said April 24 they had arrested 11 suspected members of a Nigerian mafia group behind a large-scale dating scam.

The development was made known on Wednesday in a press statement made available by the Bavarian police.

Additionally, Europol announced that it had apprehended sixteen individuals between December 7 and December 9, 2023, as part of an international operation that was aimed at apprehending Nigerian criminals who were involved in drug trafficking and distribution, human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, and money laundering both inside and outside the EU.

        No fewer than 11 Nigerians suspected to be members of a mafia group behind a large-scale dating scam and money laundering have been arrested in Germany by the German police.    The German police said in a statement on Wednesday that the Black Axe gang was involved internationally in “multiple areas of criminal activity” with a focus in Germany on dating scams and money-laundering.

The alleged gang members, using fake identities online, extorted money from victims after gaining their trust and promising marriage. The suspected criminals were Nigerians who had lived in Germany for many years.

The dating trick was a “modern form of marriage fraud”, police said on Wednesday.
