Black Bear Conservation News Today

A black bear fatally mauled a Downieville (Sierra County) woman in her home last fall in the first instance of a bear-caused human fatality in California.

Its hard to count black bears. They dont travel in herds. They are solitary and reclusive omnivores, although they occasionally display their foraging skills when they wander into a populated area and break into a garbage can or, rarely, a house.

California has never had a great method for counting bears. But they’re working on that. So until they get one, let’s stop hunting them.
