Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) helped Planned Parenthood trend on Thursday night, after she shared during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing on Birthing While Black: Examining America’s Black Maternal Health Crisis that she is a Planned Parenthood baby and wanted to talk talk about how many lives Planned Parenthood has saved and how many babies have been because of the prenatal care provided by Planned Parenthood. The congresswoman seemed to anticipate how bizarre her remarks might seem. If you don’t believe it, and if you’ve never met a Planned Parenthood baby, I’m happy to let you know that I am one and that my mother received and relied on prenatal care from Planned Parenthood when she was pregnant with me, she also said.

In early May 2021, media outlets including Fox News and The Washington Examiner claimed U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, proudly said she was a “Planned Parenthood baby” during a speech that aimed to boost support for the nonprofit organization.
She did indeed say that. With slightly different phrasing, the congresswoman said her mother, Blanca, received prenatal care from one or more providers at Planned Parenthood an example, Cortez claimed, of the nonprofit’s benefit to families.
To make that conclusion, we analyzed a video recording of her comments at a May 6 hearing of the House Oversight and Reform Committee titled, “Birthing While Black: Examining America’s Black Maternal Health Crisis.”

Democratic Missouri Representative Cori Bush used the gender-inclusive term birthing people on Thursday while testifying before the Democratic Oversight Committee about America s Black maternal health crisis. After she tweeted out a video of her testimony, the term birthing people immediately became the center of an embittered Twitter war over whether the gender-neutral term was justified. Every day, Black birthing people and our babies die because our doctors don t believe our pain. My children almost became a statistic. I almost became a statistic, read her initial tweet.
