A TAXI driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving following a targeted operation between the police and council. On Saturday, police in Blackburn, along with taxi licensing officers from Blackburn with Darwen Council carried out a drug-drive stop. Approximately 20 taxis were stopped with one driver testing positive for cocaine and cannabis - while working. A spokesperson for the police said: Response officers have tonight carried out a multi-agency operation with Blackburn Council taxi licensing officers. Around 20 taxis were stopped, four drug searches were carried out and sadly a taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving after failing a roadside drug test for cocaine and cannabis whilst working.

Former Blackburn with Darwen Council executive board member Cllr Yusuf Jan-Virmani made the comments in a debate on the recent Middle East conflict at the authority’s annual meeting on Thursday night. He is the third borough councillor to be disciplined by Labour for alleged anti-Semitism after the expulsion of former deputy leader Andy Kay and suspension of Cllr Tasleem Fazal over social media posts. The party’s action followed Blackburn Conservative Association calling for an investigation.
