American Shakespeare Center will stage the world premiere of
Keene, a new play by Anchuli Felicia King, opening Oct. 7 at the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton.
Keene was a winning submission from ASC’s Shakespeare’s New Contemporaries Program, a groundbreaking undertaking that is discovering, developing, and producing a new canon of 38 plays that are inspired by and in conversation with Shakespeare’s works. The program provides opportunities for playwrights of every background, perspective, and style to engage with Shakespeare and his stage practices and brings living writers into the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre: the Blackfriars Playhouse.

In its return to live performances, ASC productions are newly led by a cohort of actor-managers: Brandon Carter, John Harrell, Chris Johnston, and Zoe Speas. In keeping with early modern theatre tradition and ASC’s own critically acclaimed, audience-beloved practice of presenting actor-directed “Actors’ Renaissance” selections each year, the plays in this season were selected and cast by the actor-managers, and the performances will be actor-led in an extraordinary collaborative atmosphere.

STAUNTON In mid-March, the American Shakespeare Center marked its one-year anniversary since the COVID-19 pandemic partially closed the curtain on live productions and activities.
The center began a campaign to raise funds to stay open for 2021, and has raised 60 percent of its $200,000 goal.
“It will mean we will be able to keep all of the actors and staff employed,” said Kelly Burdick, the center’s director of communications of the fundraising goal, which would enable the center to continue to bring entertainment to the community for the 2021 season.
