A New York Times political journalist has died at 44 after a long and courageous battle with depression, his family said.

Hounshell was "a gifted observer of our country’s political scene,” The Times top editors said.

Blake Hounshell, a well-known journalist who edited The New York Times’ “On Politics” newsletter, died Tuesday in Washington. He was 44.

Blake Hounshell, the former Politico managing editor of politics who had recently joined The New York Times in October, died following a battle with depression.
