LANSING, MI Michigan’s electors formally cast their votes for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Monday, completing a key milestone in the process of Biden becoming the 46th U.S. president.
States across the country held similar ceremonies as the Electoral College met to sign documents that reflect certified results of the November presidential election. All of Michigan’s 16 electors, one for each of the state’s congressional districts and two U.S. Senate seats, are bound by law to support the winner of the popular vote.

LANSING (AP) Michigan electors cast 16 votes Monday for President-elect Joe Biden, who reclaimed the battleground state for Democrats on his way to winning the White House.
The vote was announced by Michigan Democratic Party Chairwoman Lavora Barnes and confirmed by Democratic Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II during a scaled-back, socially distanced Electoral College ceremony inside the Michigan Senate.
The Capitol was closed to the public due to coronavirus restrictions. Lawmakers also closed their offices because of threats of violence. Electors and some top Democrats were escorted into the Statehouse by state police while a sparse group of protesters gathered outside.

In capitols such as Lansing, Michigan; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Atlanta, Georgia, electors typically party loyalists will gather to formally cast those votes.
While there are sometimes a handful of “rogue” electors who vote for someone other than the winner of their state’s popular vote, the vast majority rubber-stamp their state’s results, and officials do not expect anything different on Monday.
Trump has called on Republican state legislators to appoint their own electors, essentially ignoring the will of the voters. State lawmakers have largely dismissed the idea.
