While 2024 has already been dubbed the Year of the Moon, it appears the ill-fated 1.2-tonne lander would not make it to Earths nearest satellite.

A historic mission to the moon is poised to take place in the early hours of Monday.

The year 2024 will see lunar lander missions, more SpaceX Starship tests, a crewed NASA Artemis II flight around the moon, and a total solar eclipse.

The moon is a big target for space launches in 2024, with NASA aiming to return the first humans in more than 50 years for a fly-by on the Artemis II mission while spate of commercial companies are lined up for their lunar landers’ shot to touch down safely.

It was a jaw-dropping year for the space industry, and while we all know by now that progress isn’t linear, we feel pretty confident that 2024 will be even more astonishing. This year was tough for many space companies, and we aren’t trying to paper that over with our optimism. SpaceX had a landmark year this year, and not only because it executed nearly 100 launches of the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets.

It will be a year filled with exploration, innovation, wonder—and no shortage of risk.

An upcoming mission to the moon will enlist a SPIDER in the search for ice beneath the surface. The Seismic Payload for Interplanetary Discovery, Exploration & Research (SPIDER) is a mission to map just below the surface of the moon conducted by Australian based Fleet Space. It will travel aboard Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost II in 2026.
