As 2020 began, Allyson Cote and Todd Thomas were not thinking, talking about or making igloos.
Now, they have the third version of their commercial-grade dining igloos ready to launch with upgrades that make them easier to assemble, available with more options and offered in different colors. A patent has been filed for their air-filtration system.
Welcome to the world of pandemic innovation.
Ocean State Shields is a Rhode Island small business that launched into the world of igloos in April. They made fire-code compliance a priority, said Cote, company CEO.
Now you see their igloos outside local restaurants including Chaska in Cranston, Bluewater Bar & Grill in Barrington and Malt in Newport. They have also been delivered to day-care centers, a food pantry and a construction company.

BARRINGTON, R.I. Three servers at a Rhode Island restaurant received a tip for over $2,000 from two generous patrons last week.
The two customers insisted that the servers at Bluewater Bar and Grill wait until they left to close the tab and left a tip for $2,100 to be split between the three on Nov. 20, WJAR-TV reported.
The server, Melissa Jordan, said that the couple, who asked to remain anonymous, brought the servers to tears with this generous gift.
“We all have children. I have two small children, Shannon has a small child also, and Karen has three children. We are of course thinking about Christmas, but not taking anything for granted and taking care of our families with it, which was his intention, Jordan said.
