A few months later, an Ethiopian Air flight departed, and flight 302 experienced problems shortly after takeoff and crashed. All 157 persons on board died. Both of these accidents were entirely preventible. We cannot fathom the pain experienced by the families of those 346 human beings who were lost. Many family members are here today and we appreciate their attendance. I appreciate many of them meeting with members of the committee over time. As chairman of this committee, i promise their loved ones were working to obtain a full answer as to how to prevent future tragedies. These families deserve answers, accountability and action. Reporter presiding judge Morris Jacobson said that incustody arraignments may have remained in oakland in the jailhoused more local prisoners. Reporter yeah, the presiding judge is saying that at the north county jail, which is the oakland jail that the Sheriffs Office is leasing, that the Sheriffs Office is leasing most of the beds to the federal government for federal inmates because they want to balance their budget. The judge says that if they were to reverse that and put more of the local prisoners in the north county jail, the oakland jail they may have maintained the arraignments at that jail for north county prisoners. Incident, they exercised the Safety Authority by conducting an inspection of metrorail and bus which resulted in spor safety findings. The report identified numerous deficiencies and operational concerns. In october 2015, secretary fox instructed fta to temporarily assume the responsibilities of the local ssoa, the tristate Oversight Committee. Fta has been on the site providing direct oversight of metrorail. The safety team is comprised of subject Matter Experts from across the department. This team has transit Industry Knowledge and expertise, technical ability and power to improve metrorail safety. Over the past several months. We have conducted inspections and investigations and verify corrective actions. As of last week, they conducted 107 inspections that covered track, rail operations, vehicle and systems maintenance, automatic train control and traction power.
