opened the door to that possibility. now refusing to endorse speaker paul ryan and senator john mccain. it is 5:00 a.m. on the east coast, 2:00 a.m. out west, this is "way too early." good morning, it is wednesday, august 3rd, i'm chris jansing. three months to the day today that donald trump won the indiana republican primary which essentially knocked out his final opponents for the nomination. yet on tuesday, trump continued his war with party leadership, by withholding his endorsement from house speaker paul ryan and 2008 republican nominee john mccain in their primaries this month. on supporting ryan, trump told "the washington post," quote, i'm not quite there yet. just not quite there yet. his language echoed what the speaker said in may when he held back endorsing trump. >> i'm just not ready to do that at this pont. i'm not there right now. i hope to support his candidacy fully. and i want to do that. but right now, just i got to tell you, jake, being candid with you, at this point, i'm just not there right now. >> well, trump said everybody wants my support when asked if ryan had asked for his support, ryan's office denies that. quote, neither speaker ryan nor anyone on his team has ever asked for donald trump's endorsement. we are confident in a victory next week regardless. ryan's opponent paul nehlen released a statement that said in part paul ryan's repeated betrayals of the gop nominee is beneath the dig knitty of the speaker's office and is naturally disqualifying. donald trump also hit back at john mccain the five-term senator and vietnam p.o.w. who rebuked trump for questioning the right of a fallen soldier's parents to criticize him. trump said, i haven't endorsed john mccain and i've never been there with john mccain because i've always felt that he should have done a much better job for vets. mccain has not responded, though he did meet privately with trump's running mate governor mike pence in phoenix last night. aides say they discussed national security issues but pence did not address trump's comments or mccain's during his arizona campaign swing. president obama is urging republicans to withdraw their endorsements of donald trump. during a press conference yesterday the president issued some of his strongest criticisms to date. >> i think the republican nominee is unfit to serve as president. i said so last week, and he keeps on proving it. the fact that he doesn't appear to have basic knowledge around critical issues in europe, in the middle east, in asia, means that he's woefully unprepared to do this job. i think what's been interesting is the repeated denunciations of his statements by leading republicans. including the speaker of the house, and the senate majority leader, and prominent republicans like john mccain. and the question i think that they have to ask themselves is, if you are repeatedly having to say, in very strong terms, that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him? >> both trump and running mate mike pence responded to the president's comments last night. >> president barack obama gave a speech today, talking about my running mate a little bit. he actually said that the republican nominee is unfit to serve. he did. and he said the fact that he doesn't appear to have basic knowledge about critical issues in europe, middle east and asia means that he's quote, woefully unprepared to do this job. well, let me -- let me me say i think barack obama knows something about being woefully unprepared to be president of the united states. >> i think he's the worst president maybe in the history of our country. i think he's been a disaster. he's been weak. he's been ineffective. you look at this so-called recovery, it's setting record lows. it's i guess not since 1949 has there been anything like it. i think he's one of the worst presidents, maybe the worst, that we've ever had in the history of our country. i think that hillary clinton maybe has a -- she has the potential to be even worse. >> as donald trump continues to fight with republicans some in his party are taking their support to the other side, backing hillary clinton. 2010 california gubernatorial nominee and republican fund-raiser meg whitman endorsing clinton. a source tells nbc news clinton speak with the hewlett-packard ceo about a month ago and that whitman will raise money for the democrats. she released a statement overnight saying in part, it is clear to me that secretary clinton's temperament, global experience, and commitment to america's bedrock national values make her the far better choice in 2016 for president of the united states. in a tumultuous world, america needs the kind of stable and aspirational leadership secretary clinton can provide. meanwhile, congressman richard hannah of new york announced yesterday that he will vote for mrs. clinton in november, making him the first sithing congressional republican to support her. hanna said he decided to take action after watching trump criticize the muslim american parents of a u.s. army captain killed in iraq. in an op-ed congressman hanna writes in part, quote, while a disagree with her on many issues i will vote for mrs. clinton. i will be hopeful and resolute in my belief that being a good american who loves his country is far more important than parties or winning and losing. i trust she can lead. also joining the growing list a former top aide of trump ally governor chris christie. maria camilla says she will vote for christie in the fall and even christie in a rare break with trump spoke out yesterday saying it was inappropriate to criticize the khan family. >> i cannot imagine the pain of losing a child, under any circumstances. and for mr. and mrs. khan, the pain of losing their son, while defending our country, is unfathomable. and i think it gives them the right to say whatever they want. whether they're right or wrong. you're not going to find me being critical of mr. and mrs. khan no matter what they do. even if i may disagree with them, because any one particular statement they might make, it's just inappropriate for us, in this context, to be criticizing them. and i'm not going to participate in that. >> trump also received the criticism of a medal of honor recep yant dakota myer who is also the son-in-law of former alaska governor and trump supporter sarah palin. he tweeted, if donald trump wants to be the commander in chief he needs to act like one. and that can't start until he apologizes to the khans. but yesterday, trump refused to admit any missteps when it came to his handling of the killed in action soldier's family. >> do you regret at all engaging in this back and forth with the khans? >> i don't regret anything. i said nice things about the son, and i feel that very strongly. but, of course, i was hit very hard from the stage, and you know, it's just one of those things. >> it wasn't wise to bring the mother in. i understand khan. for you to bring her in that gives them the opportunity, just opens the door for them to come in and hammer you, as this mean kind of guy. >> i understand that. but, you know, part of it is i read a lot and i watch a lot and many, many people discussed this. many, many people that said it. so when i said it it became like a big deal and that's, you know, the way it is. but i was very viciously attacked and i said not very viciously back -- >> but if there's some little muslim woman who loses her son, you can't. you just can't. no matter what she does. she can set you on fire and you can say thank you, i hated those trousers. you just got to let it go -- >> i didn't fight her. >> let's hold you over -- >> please remember i was viciously attacked. and all i did was respond to it and it ends up being a four-day story. >> now, five. donald trump campaigned in virginia yesterday where he got a special gift from a retired army officer, amid the uproar about his treatment of the khan family. >> a man came up to me and he handed me his purple heart. now i said to him, i said to him, is that like the real one or is that a copy? and he said, that's my real purple heart. i have such confidence in you. and i said, man, that's like -- that's like dig stuff. i always wanted to get the purple heart. this was much easier. >> the clinton campaign was quick to react to trump's remark, tweeting this from a man who says he's quote sacrificed for our country. while democratic senate candidate and double amputee veteran tammy duck worth tweeted this photo of her receiving her purple heart writing, this is how what usually looks when you are awarded the purple heart. nothing easy about it. controversy is growing over comments trump and his son eric made about sexual harassment in the workplace, as well. it started when donald trump was asked in an interview with "usa today" how he would feel if his daughter ivanka was sexually harassed at work the way gretchen carlson and others say former fox news executive roger ailes harassed them. trump said he hoped ivanka would find another career or find another company if that was the case. trump's son eric then attempted to defend his father's comments yesterday morning. >> you're saying ivanka is a strong, you know, powerful woman. she wouldn't allow herself to be, you know, subjected to it. and by the way you should certainly take it up with human resources and i think she definitely would as a strong person. at the same time i don't think she would allow herself to be subjected to that. and i think that's the point he was making and i think he did so well. >> following eric trump's comments, former fox news anchor gretchen carlson whose sexual harassment lawsuit against ailes precipitated his resignation from fox tweeted this, sad in 2016 we're still victim blaming women. trust me, i'm strong. fox news anchor megyn kelly tweeted simply, sigh. and last night ivanka trump was asked to weigh in on this controversy. >> i think sexual harassment is inexcusable in any setting. i think harassment in general, regardless, sexual or otherwise, is totally inexcusable, and if it transpires, it needs to be reported. and it needs to be dealt with on a company level. we have a very strong hr team at the trump organization who is equipped to deal with these issues if they arise. and we hope they never arise. you hope you have a culture in which they don't arise. but when they do, it needs to be dealt with swiftly. >> and new this morning, a fourth member of congress has been ousted in his party primary. republican tim huelskamp, a vocal tea party congressman and foe of speaker john boehner lost in kansas last night defeated by roger marshall, an obstetrician backed by agricultural and religious groups. and last night a staffer to the former speaker shared this photo of him celebrating with a glass of red wine. there's also a major reorganization at the democratic national committee this morning following the publication of those hacked internal e-mails. ceo amy dacy and two other top officials are stepping down. e-mails published by wikileaks show their apparent favoritism toward hillary clinton in the democratic primary. the e-mails led to the resignation of dnc chairwoman debbie wasserman schultz last week. the dnc is now being overseen by donna brazile. and still ahead on "way too early," he is the most prominent police commissioner in the nation but the nypd's top cap bill bratton says he's stepping down. we'll have the latest on that. >> the president maybe in the history of our country. i think he's been a disaster. he's been weak. he's been ineffective. you look at this so-called recovery, it's setting record lows. it's i guess not since 1949 has there been anything like it. i think he's one of the worst presidents, maybe the worst, that we've ever had in the history of our country. i think that hillary clinton maybe has a -- she has the potential to be even worse. >> as donald trump continues to fight with fellow republicans, some in his party are taking their support to the other side backing hillary clinton. 2010 california gubernatorial nominee and republican fund-raiser meg whitman now endorsing clinton. a source tells nbc news clinton spoke with the hewlett-packard ceo about a month ago, and that whitman will raise money for the democrat. she released a statement overnight saying in part, it is clear to me that secretary clinton's temperament, global experience, and commitment to america's bedrock national values make her the far better choice in 2016 for president of the united states. in a tumultuous world america needs the kind of table and aspirational leadership secretary clinton can provide. meanwhile, congressman richard hanna of new york announced yesterday that he will vote for mrs. clinton in november. making him the first sitting congressional republican to support her. hanna said he decided to take action after watching trump criticize the muslim american parents of a u.s. army captain killed in iraq. in an op-ed congressman hanna writes in part, quote, while a disagree with her on many issues i will vote for mrs. clinton. i will be hopeful and resolute in my belief that being a good american who loves his country is far more important than parties or winning and losing. i trust she can lead. also joining the growing list a former top aide of trump ally governor chris christie. maria comela says she will vote for christie in the fall and even christie in a rare break with trump spoke out yesterday saying it was inappropriate to criticize the khan family. >> i cannot imagine the pain of losing a child, under any circumstances. and for mr. and mrs. khan, the pain of losing their son, while defending our country, is unfathomable. and i think it gives them the right to say whatever they want. whether they're right or wrong. you're not going to find me being critical of mr. and mrs. khan no matter what they do. even if i may disagree with them, because any one particular statement they might make, it's just inappropriate for us, in this context, to be criticizing them. and i'm not going to participate in that. >> do you regret at all engaging in this back and forth with the khans? >> i don't rret anything. i said nice things about the son ani feel that very strongly. but of course, i was hit very hard from the stage and you know, it's just one of those things. >> meanwhile, a new poll in the presidential race shows hillary clinton extending her lead. the reuters up sos online poll has clinton ahead 43% to donald trump's 35%, increasing her lead from six to eight points since the democratic convention. let's turn now to business. global markets in the red this morning as the dow looks to snap a seven-day losing streak today. cnbc's luisa bojesen joins us live from london. good morning. >> good morning, chris. yeah, markets this morning here in europe relatively mixed. we opened flatish. we're just seeing a little bit more red on our screens, as it were. as you say, the dow, and the s&p both closing at three-week lows. we still have all this earnings momentum, the dollar pushing lower, and today you're going to be wanting to look out for the adp private sector employment data, and the ism nonmanufacturing data, as well. the market now not pricing in for a fed hike at any point until 2018. and the market by and large is trying to reposition for this in many instances. just want to talk a little bit about what took place in after-hours trade yesterday. we saw aig the insurance company beating expectations raising their buyback program as well. they're going to be buying back $3 billion worth of shares. net income figure of $1.9 billion, up from $1.8 billion that we saw year-on-year. they're still on quite a lot of pressure to break themselves apart. we could be hearing more about that in the near future. fitbit popping up by more than 6% after they posted their second quarter numbers. you would recall that they listed quite recently they had this -- they went public back in june and since then reported five times the first four times after reporting you saw the stock dropping quite significantly afterwards because people think how are they going to manage to keep a grip on competition like apple in the long-term. but this time things are looking promising, and a little bit of a pop there. also just to mentionatesy up by 5% on the back of their quarterly numbers as well. >> luisa bojesen live from london thank you. president obama is calling the new campaign of airstrikes against the islamic state group in libya a critical move. as the u.s. expands its military operations beyond iraq and syria, nbc news has exclusively obtained a map showing the global expansion of the terror group. cynthia mcfadden has the details. >> reporter: the u.s. launched more airstrikes against isis targets in libya. representing an expansion of u.s. military operations beyond iraq and syria. an nbc news exclusive, this map, part of the monthly classified briefing received by the white house. dated august 2016. from the national counterterrorism center. it shows the worldwide expansion of the islamic state. a stunning three-fold increase since the u.s. and its allies began their military campaign against isis two years ago. >> that map could probably be a lot bigger if they were to show all the aspirational regions where isis wants to operate. >> reporter: in 2014, there were seven countries in which isis was operating. by 2015, that number was nearly double to 13. the briefing map indicates 18 countries where the islamic state is fully operational. and a new category, aspiring isis branches of which there are six countries include bangladesh where last month isis took credit for killing 24 people. in a year in which politicians are vigorously debating the war against terror, the battleground is clearly expanding. >> meantime the u.s. secretly shipped iran $400 million around the same time that country released four american prisoners. that's according to "the wall street journal" which says a combination of foreign currencies were packed on wooden pallets and flown to iran on an unmarked cargo plane in january. it cites u.s. and european officials and congressional staff briefed on the operation. the "journal" says u.s. officials deny the money was tied to the release of the prisoners, though, although the exact details were not revealed it's worth noting that secretary of state john kerry did release a statement in january with much of this information as the prisoners were being released. kerry said the money was part of a $1.7 billion settlement with iran of a claim over a deal for the sale of military equipment back in 1979. he added that the settlement was made to cut litigation risks. republican vice presidential nominee mike pence wasted no time criticizing the reported move, while talking about the nuclear deal between the u.s. and iran at a rally in phoenix. >> if you haven't heard about it yet, tonight "the wall street journal" is actually reporting that on the day, and it's around the time the deal was done, and american hostages were being released, the administration airlifted $400 million in cash to iran. you know, we cannot have four more years accommodating and apologizing to our enemies or abandoning our friends. america needs to be strong for the world to be safe and donald trump will lead on the world stage from strength. >> and still ahead, the new information suggesting that flossing may not actually benefit you. and donald trump's bad luck with babies continues. the
