Westlake debris pickup complete

Westlake residents who have damaged building materials, limbs, stumps and other trash remaining on their property are responsible for cleaning it up. All city-wide hurricane debris removal has been completed, according to the Mayor Bob Hardey. “Remaining debris is the responsibility of the property owner,” Hardey said. “Certified letters will be going out giving property owners notice that they will have 30 days to remove the debris, or the city will have it done at the property owners’ expense. I also want to remind Westlake citizens that it is illegal to blow any grass clippings into the road and/or into the storm drains.”

Westlake expands city limits in rebuilding Isle of Capri casino Westlake expands city limits By Andrea Robinson | May 3, 2021 at 6:18 PM CDT - Updated May 3 at 8:04 PM WESTLAKE, La. (KPLC) - The City of Westlake just got a little bigger. The City Council approved an ordinance to expand the city’s boundaries. Previously, the Isle of Capri casino was actually located in Westlake and in one unincorporated area of Calcasieu Parish. With plans to rebuild the new casino, owned by Caesars Entertainment, it will now solely be on Westlake grounds amid the latest expansion of city limits. Construction for the Isle of Capri’s new land-based casino is underway and expected to open in the summer of 2022.

City praised during storm Westlake, able to share water while other cities under boil advisory

While surrounding communities were working to bring water back, Westlake was sharing from its supply. Mayor Bob Hardey commended Doug Fleming and his department during a specialcalled City Council meeting Monday for their performance during the ice storm and subsequent water issues. The meeting was originally scheduled for the Feb. 15, but was postponed because of the severe weather and road conditions. “Doug’s public works department did a phenomenal job,” Hardey said. “Doug’s crew kept us going even with Jones Street water plant out of service — and Jones Street produces about 700,000 gallons a day.” The city of Westlake was able to put water out every two hours to the north section of town, send seven 18-wheelers of water to Memorial Hospital in Lake Charles and also help a Women’s Hospital in Houston with its water needs.

City of Westlake forms committee to explore city limits expansion

WESTLAKE — The Westlake City Council approved the formation of a City Limit Expansion Committee at their monthly meeting Monday night. The committee will be chaired by council member Jeremy Cryer and Kenny Brown will be a member.  Mayor Bob Hardey said the exploratory committee will determine how much interest there is from residents in unincorporated areas, what it would cost to provide services to new residents, how it would affect the city’s fire rating and more. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we find,” Hardey said. “It’s not a forced annexation.” The mayor said the cost of providing services may be prohibitive, noting that it cost $1 million to provide sewer to one city block.

Westlake on the path to recovery from tough 2020

Like much of Calcasieu Parish, the last several months of 2020 were a blur of recovery and rebuilding after the summer hurricanes for Westlake. “We had close to 30 (municipal) sites that were damaged,” Mayor Bob Hardey said Tuesday. “City Hall took the worst of it.” The east and back sides of the building had to be rebuilt due to the collapse of a 30 foot section of wall on the east side, which served a drive-thru, drop off location for utility payments. Those are now being handled in the lobby of City Hall, with most of the other departments sharing space in Council Chambers.
