MDOT brings attention to National Work Zone Awareness Week

CADILLAC — A minor construction project started Tuesday on M-115 near the famous Cadillac/Mitchell canal, but the focus by the Michigan Department of Transportation wasn t on the work. Instead, it was put on the safety of the construction workers and motorists who travel through the construction zone. Fall 2020 was a time of tragedy for Michigan s road and bridge workers. In a matter of three months, five road workers were struck and killed and three more were injured in work zone crashes. As MDOT and other road agencies around the state begin another season of rebuilding and maintaining Michigan s roads and bridges, drivers, passengers, and workers must take work zone safety seriously. There were 15 fatalities total in Michigan work zones last year and 69 serious injuries, 785 injury crashes and 4,900 total crashes.

MDOT Reminding Drivers to Slow Down, Pay Attention in Construction Zones

9 & 10 News April 27, 2021 This week is National Work Zone Awareness week and the Michigan Department of Transportation is using the week to remind drivers about slowing down in work zones to keep their crews safe. Bob Helsel is one of the thousands of MDOT workers who will be working in road construction zones in the coming months, just feet away from drivers who sometimes are driving too fast or driving distracted. MDOT says those are the two most common factors they see in work zone crashes. “It’s frustrating for the employee, often time’s we’ll have a spotter and they’ll let us know to get back when someone is driving in excess of speed or not paying attention, because we’re out here doing a service for the public and we want the driver and the employees to all be safe,” said Helsel.
