Two years after he joined the major leagues he was playing for the red sox. Two years later he pitched two winning games for the red sox in the world series after a season where he hit 11 home runs. The next year, he hit 29 home runs and became a national star. In 1920 the red sox sold ruth to the yankees. Ruth began hitting the ball out of the park and by the end of the season, he thrilled the crowd by calling his shots. Hello everyone im Frank Somerville and welcome to a second look. This march marks 28 years since one of the most catastrophic events in history the loma prieta quake. Much of the attention was already focused on the bay area because of the world series. As the third game of the series was just about to begin an earthquake measuring in magnitude 7. 1 hit the bay area. It knocked down freeways, collapsed buildings and in San Francisco alone it touched off at least 27 fires. The quake also killed 67 people, injured 3,757 others and left more than 12,000 homeless. In this edition of a second look we continue our look back at the earthquake which we began last sunday. Tonight the focus is on San Francisco. Wildfire seasons on record. . Midmay as temperatures soared into the 90s a series of wildfires broke out as the hot, dry santa ana winds pushed the heat forward. In all there were 19 individual fires burning within weeks. When the smoke cleared one man was dead. Dozens of homes lay in ruins and more than 21 homes had burned. As of july 1st, crews had responded to more than 2,700 wildfires. Thats about 1,000 more than usual for this time of year. But while flames can quickly consume large areas, as Bob Mackenzie first reported back in 1994, firefighters and homeowners have to protect the land foot by foot, and house by house. This morning, Fire Fightings crews moved in toward the monster rather than waiting for it to come to them. 125 years ago today the jukebox was introduced in downtown San Francisco. Tonight we celebrate the music to recording artists and the dancing from the jukebox era. Its all straight ahead on a second look. Hi everybody im Frank Somerville and welcome to a second look. Today were celebrating the jukebox. It was on this day, november 28, 1979 that visitors to an establishment in San Francisco saw this instrument. The inventors had placed four inner tubes allowing four people. The nickel until slot had earned over 1,000. Which would be about 26,000 today. As jukeboxes became automatic and amplified their popularity grew even more. Due in parts to restrictions on the music played by radio stations. Early radio rarely played records by black musicians known as rhythm and blues. But the player could be stocked with whatever the listener wanted. They became popular in juke bars and the name jukebox stuck.
