But, the Dragons never found the desired results.
That’s because Park Hills Central bolted to a 15-6 lead by the end of the first quarter, forcing Ste. Genevieve to play what proved to be a fruitless game of “catch up.”
In the end, the Rebels defeated the Dragons 64-52 in the Class 4 District 2 championship game at Potosi High School on Thursday evening.
Ste. Genevieve finished the season with a record of 18-6, while Park Hills Central (18-5) ventures to New Madrid County Central for a sectional round contest.
Marysa Flieg made two free throws, slicing Central’s lead to 45-40 with 7:02 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Dragons had another possession to chisel the Rebels’ margin even further, but recorded a turnover.

Ste. Genevieve High School’s Abby Moore made a putback basket and then a free throw to give the Dragons a 15-0 lead with 2:50 left in the first quarter during a Monday, Feb. 1 game versus rival Park Hills Central.
The Rebels never completely shoveled out from that early hole.
And Ste. Genevieve claimed its third consecutive Mineral Area Activities Association Large School Division regular-season title with a 53-41 conquest over Central.
Ste. Genevieve girls took a photo after the game, holding three fingers up with enough smiles to make a dental commercial.
It was a far cry from Central’s 67-59 victory over St. Genevieve in the championship game of the Bob Sechrest Jr. Christmas Tournament when the Dragons fell behind early and committed 22 personal fouls.

The Ste. Genevieve High School girls’ basketball team didn’t allow last Thursday’s contest versus Potosi turn into what’s considered a “trap” game.
A trap game can be defined a variety of ways, but it’s when a stout team overlooks what’s perceived as a weaker opponent.
That didn’t happen at Peggy J. Johnson Gymnasium as the Dragons downed Potosi 60-28 in a Mineral Area Activities Association Large School Division game.
The game versus the Trojans was sandwiched in between a Monday, Jan. 25 divisional game versus North County which Ste. Genevieve rallied to win 71-60 behind 21 points apiece for Sydney Bumgardaner and Megan Aubuchon and last Monday’s game against Park Hills Central.
