It was in September 2023 that Uday Kotak, the founder, MD and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank stepped down. The Reserve Bank of India had in 2021 capped the maximum tenure of MD and CEOs at 15 years. So, Kotak was due to retire by the end of December 2023. Subsequently, international banker Ashok Vaswani, who had earlier been the CEO of British Bank Barclays, was announced as his successor, effective January 1, 2024.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed strict restrictions on Kotak Mahindra Bank, a third-most valued private bank in India, for failing to fix its IT systems over the past two years. The bank was asked to stop functions cited "with immediate effect" and assured customers that there would be no interruption to services. Kotak Mahindra Bank has taken measures to strengthen its IT systems and will continue to work with the RBI to resolve balance issues at the earliest.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) barred Kotak Mahindra Bank from signing up new customers through its online and mobile banking channels, and issuing fresh credit cards, among the toughest curbs imposed on a scheduled bank.

The RBI said Kotak Mahindra Bank was found to be non-compliant with the corrective action plans issued for 2022-23. The lender lacks ‘robust IT infrastructure and IT Risk Management framework’, and its online and digital banking channels have suffered frequent outages in the last two years

The bank should be able to continue resilience in IT systems, the management said.

According to Vivek Joshi, secretary of the finance ministrys Department of Financial Services, Paytm must resolve the regulatory problems faced by its payments bank with the Reserve Bank of India.
