The Center for Civil Rights History and Research, founded in November of 2015, has received $1.5 million to enhance education and establish more exhibits across the state.
The board of trustees voted on Jan. 7 to rename a residence hall after Celia Dial Saxon. This marks the first time a campus building will be named after a person of color. Saxon was one of the first Black women to graduate from USC and was an educator and civil rights activist in Columbia for 57 years.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) A national organization dedicated to electing progressive Black women at all levels has given its backing to state Sen. Mia McLeod in the South Carolina governor's race. In its endorsement of the Democrat, Higher Heights for America on Monday called McLeod “a fierce advocate for jobs, economic and workforce development" who “knows how to bring Democrats and Republicans together to make real progress for South Carolina.”
