Pool of London: in search of the locations for the classic British noir Filmed in the capital’s busy docklands, British noir Pool of London pushed the envelope in depicting an interracial romance on screen. This classic dockside noir was directed by Basil Dearden. During the 1940s, he’d made some of Ealing Studios’ darkest and most innovative features, including sections of the classic anthology horror Dead of Night (1945). Pool of London indicated his later turn towards more political subjects, whether disenfranchised working-class youth in Violent Playground (1958), homosexuality in Victim (1961) or racism in Sapphire (1959).

Share with: This veritable trip down memory lane is a film that will appeal to a selective and specialized audience. In truth there won’t be many people under 70 or 80 who will be in any way familiar with the stars of this film… that said it will make the perfect Christmas present for gran or gramps (or anyone who is into lighthearted variety entertainment). Jimmy Knowles (Nat Jackley), Sally Bishop (Pat Kirkwood) and Ann Hart (Dorothy Squires) are three variety performers trying their best to keep their entertaining and diverse show on the road but are having trouble finding a half decent audience.
