House Republicans passed H.R.2, the Secure the Border Act, on Thursday afternoon ahead of the Trump-era Title 42 immigration restriction expiring at midnight.

Progressive activist groups are considering unseating Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar, who remains one of the only Democrats to align with Republicans on the border.

At midnight on Thursday evening, the pandemic-era rule allowing authorities to expel illegal immigrants at the southern border expired.

The Secure the Border Act would resume construction of the border wall, limit asylum eligibility and require asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico. It faces tough going in the Senate.

The vote coincided with the expiration of Title 42, a policy that allowed the U.S. to turn away migrants in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID.

The House GOP passes a bill limiting asylum eligibility, and more, just hours before Title 42 expires.
