situation, and we still have, at last check, about 7,500 migrants underneath this border bridge in del rio, texas. that remains closed for the time being. all traffic being diverted to eagle pass, about 60 miles south of us here. so authorities can get a better handle on what s become just an incredibly heartbreaking scene here. we know that there are men, women, and children underneath that bridge, some of whom have had trouble finding enough food and water to last, despite handouts from agents that are down there. i spoke to one 25-year-old haitian man, darneil, who told me that he and his pregnant wife spent about a week underneath that very bridge. at one point, things got so bad, he chose to swim back across the rio grande into mexico with a little money he had to purchase food and water, and upon swimming back, got caught up in the currents with, had to let go of what he had just to make it to the other shore. he is not the only one with a similar story to that. in the meantime,
virtual tent city there. we saw children playing with toys in the shade of that border bridge, men and women filling up water bottles at these massive tanks that have been put into place by border patrol there. that is essentially how life is going day to day here, with the impending realization that already more than a thousand of those fellow haitians who came over this river have already been sent back to haiti. those numbers according to the department of homeland security. and so you re right, tensions are rising. they do know the consequences at stake here. and yet they wait beneath that bridge, trying to find whatever food, water they can that s being handed out. there were several that were able to go back into mexico and get food. that s no longer being allowed by texas dps which remains on the border, those cruisers parked on the river banks. we have seen more supplies going into the camp. that said, we ve seen the numbers drop considerably. we re now less than 6,000
9,000 migrants are still living in the shade of that border bridge not too far away from where i m standing. we know that flights are expected to pick up today, both back to haiti, but also what they re calling lateral flights and that is flying migrants to other processing centers that are currently not dealing with the overwhelmed nature that del rio is. in the meantime we are still seeing that massive law enforcement presence here, state troopers continuing to essentially park on the banks of the rio grande. border patrol agents focusing on processing as fast as possible. buses running 24/7 from this camp. while the numbers are dwindling there is still not a firm timetable on how quickly everyone will be able to be processed. important to note dhs has said that not everyone will be deported. they re focusing deportation-wise on single haitian adults and families that do not claim asylum, but any accompanied child, any family claiming asylum will likely stay in the united states. the
