they re going to try to encourage the chamber of commerce to get on republicans in the house to support at least something to get this to what s called a conference so the two can start to talk about it and also to get the president in high gear. he was really pulling back as the bipartisan bill was moved through the senate because he didn t want to interrupt that. now they are hoping he gets his political operation up and running because at the end of the day, this really is something that is going to be his legacy if he can sign it. chris? dana, thank you very much. you heard chuck grassley, it s now moving into a place where this is about border security first, not a path to citizenship. let s talk more with congressman ileana ros-lehtonen, a house republican from florida and member of the house foreign affairs committee. great to see you. thank you, kate, congrats on the new show. thank you very much. you just heard in the report 14 republican senators joined democrats to p
political news analyst. how do you think this goes when it gets over to the house? i don t think there is a lot of chance the exact bill gets picked up in the house. i think the house talked about picking up certain parts of it. insisting on enforcement first. it has the same element as the senate bill but flips them and says 68% of americans and 66% of democrats think enforcement should come first, even though they are friendly on a path to citizenship. and senate democrats don t get their exact legislation on a silver platter because they passed it in the senate. that temperature not how congress works. martha: senator rubio says that s what this bill does. because it does allow for border security first. those 14 agree with that assessment. i m somebody who is friendly to immigration reform.
that s pretty embarrassing for the majority after they promised a fair and open debate. and now appears that the legislation won t be voted on by friday, but senator harry reid said earlier, he hopes he can get an agreement with republicans, move the vote up to tomorrow. either way, it s expected to pass in the senate. likely to hit a few roadblocks when it arrives in the house of representatives. here is chair of the house budget committee, wisconsin congressman, former vice presidential candidate, paul ryan. how are you? i m doing great, sean. how are you? i m sure you are aware, a lot of conservatives are angry, myself included. no border security first. we re not going to bring up the senate bill. we ll do it our own way, on our own time, because we want to make sure we get this right. the things in the amendment were improvements, brought it closer to the house position, but we want to get it right. real triggers on the border,
just happened. the senate just voting to pass the immigration bill. the vote was 68-32. all democrats, and 14 republicans voted in favor of it. my next guest was not one of them. kentucky republican senator rand paul. i want to know what your main objections were to this bill. you know, i ve been in favor of it and still am in favor of immigration reform elm just think it should be dependent on border security first. i had an amendment that said, well, hey, guys, let s secure the border and have congress vote on whether the border is secured before we go further. i just couldn t go along with it because i m fearful this won t fix illegal immigration, that we still will have significant illegal immigration with this bill. $40 billion extra for border security. going to hire 20,000 extra agents and buy a lot of
will be dead on arrival in the house of representatives. house republicans are talking about the incremental approach you favor. deal with enforcement first and after that deal with the 11 million illegals who are in this country. take a listen to speaker boehner. it is border security and confidence that we have the border secured before we begin to go down this path of addressing both the legal immigration issues and the illegal immigration issues. chris: senator lee, senator graham and a lot of democrats say it will kill the legislation. they will not accept border enforcement first and then a promise to deal with legalization for the 11 million who are here, after. guest: that is what they say. that is what they want to be the case. the house of representatives has it right, however, the house of representatives has said border security first. they are doing expect the right thing, dealing with this in the
