Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been providing regular updates about the UK’s fight against coronavirus from Number 10 Downing Street throughout the pandemic. With England more than three weeks into its third lockdown, today the PM announced that the new Covid variant might be more deadly than the original strain.

ICU staff from Wolverhampton s New Cross Hospital warned that “this time no-one is immune” to the virus. It comes as the UK registered 55,761 new COVID-19 cases on Friday.

Boris Johnson will hold another Covid briefing from Downing Street tonight, where he will plead with the public to stay at home. The latest news comes amid skyrocketing UK case and deaths, with the third lockdown not providing significant relief for health workers across the UK. Mr Johnson is expected to launch a new campaign urging people to do their bit and help curb infections.

Boris Johnson is facing a day of heavy scrutiny today (Wednesday, January 13) into his policies for handling Covid-19. This afternoon Mr Johnson was questioned by Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, in the House of Commons for Prime Minister’s Questions. The Prime Minister will also face a 90-minute quizzing on his strategies later today.

A post-Brexit trade deal is on the cusp of being delivered more than four and a half years after 17.4 million people voted to leave the European Union.
