The state will look at the alternative execution method amid a spate of botched executions in the US.

The US state of Alabama is set to resume executions by the use of lethal injection after failed executions last year.

Governor Kay Ivey says an internal review of the state's execution procedures is complete and the state will begin scheduling lethal injections. She initiated the review in November after three lethal injections were aborted because of problems with intravenous lines.

Arizona has a history of mismanaged executions that have resulted in serious questions and concerns about [its] execution protocols and lack of transparency.

The report attributes the crisis to “executioner incompetence, failures to follow protocols or defects in the protocols themselves.”

The New York Times calls 2022 the "Year of Botched Executions," noting that "several high-profile failures forced states including Alabama and Tennessee to temporarily halt executions."
