Ibadan: The many firsts of an ancient city

Share If you plan to build your house like that of Adebisi, you might end up not building any house at all” is a recurring phrase in Ibadan. It is employed to sermonise people to avoid unaffordable show-off. The owner of that first-of-its-kind, one-of-a-kind residential building being referred to in that expression is Sanusi Adebisi, one of the wealthiest men of his time, during the colonial era. He died 83 years ago – on 23 January, 1938. A visit to the mansion in Idikan on Wednesday showed that modernity has done so little to prevent the building from still standing tall in that heart-of-the-city community. The architectural design still exuded class.

Tourism: Journey from Ibadan to Layipo

Share Tourist sites bring nostalgia of history, growth, time and season. It is also expected that culture comes alive when tourist attractions are explored because all that surround a place is often disclosed when there is a landmark. FAVOUR BOLUWADE who visited the popular Bower Tower in Ibadan, which is almost losing its grace and glory, reports how history was made at the site and the feel of  joy it would bring when renovated.  Though built in 1930, the unique architectural creation still looked pristine and well-structured. It is the Bower Tower, located in one of the oldest areas of Ibadan, Oyo State. The tower which is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the largest city in West Africa has an excellent view that could allow one see the splattered brown roofs like broken China J.P Clark had beautifully described in his poem, ‘Ibadan’.
