After 96 days in the hospital, a Crete volunteer firefighter is welcomed home in a big way.

By the time Elder noticed the flames whipping toward, it was too late. What's kept him the most motivated during recovery is the community's outreach.

"When youre crawling through the fire, I was just thinking to myself, Is this really happening?" the 54-year-old said.

'This is the tip of the iceberg,' Brad Elder said.

"When I stopped on Monday he was still intubated and was still out of it, but this morning when I stopped, he was doing great," Crete Fire Chief Tod Allen said.

Officials say the rapidly moving flames overtook him and another Crete firefighter as they were protecting a home.

A farmer had been operating a shredder in Gage County on Sunday when weeds or grass being shredded ignited, kicking off the destructive blaze, according the State Fire Marshal.
