Cleveland names Shoemaker as police chief

A 30-year law enforcement veteran who currently serves as a captain at Hall County Sheriff’s Office will be the new police chief in Cleveland. The Cleveland City Council voted Monday night to name Jeff Shoemaker of a Clermont address in White County to the city’s top law enforcement post. Shoemaker previously worked at Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson and Gainesville police departments. His most recent time with Hall County Sheriff’s Office began in 2002 and he currently is responsible for the Jail Division. (Photo: Dean Dyer) An iconic business on the square in Downtown Cleveland will soon close its doors as the two business owners have decided it s time for them to retire.  Bradley Greene and Charlie Thomas, the owners of Nix Hardware and Furniture, have made it public that it s time for them to do something else.  Greene has worked at the store for 46 years, while Thomas has spent 40 years at the business. Nix Hardware was established in 1945 by the late J.L. Nix; Greene and Thomas acquired the business in 2000.
