The 2021 college lacrosse season got underway in a manner befitting the oddness of the last 10 months.
Two conference foes played a non-conference game in January in Macon, Ga. In the absence of a formal live stream, hundreds of starved lacrosse fans watched a Periscope stream via a Bellarmine player (junior midfielder Cameron Herbert) recovering from illness and saw field level highlights courtesy of an injured Mercer player (sophomore midfielder Cole Leggett) posting to IL’s Instagram. One face-off specialist one all but one face-off and the teams combined for just seven fewer turnovers than shots.

Let the games begin. Or, better said, the games have begun.
And that’s great news for the Melrose High School winter sports coaches and athletes. Games are underway.
Tryouts for the Red Raiders began on Dec. 14, and games started on Jan. 2, with the boys’ basketball and girls’ basketball teams picking up wins over Stoneham, the Stoneham-Melrose girls’ hockey team beating Winchester and the boys’ hockey team racing back to a 4-4 tie with Stoneham. Gymnastics is also looking forward to its season.
The Middlesex League is limiting the winter season to 10 contests, with a chance of a small league tournament at the end of the season, according to Melrose athletic director Stephen Fogarty.

The award for moral courage went to Corporal Paddy Bradshaw from Raheny in Dublin, who recently returned from Syria. On November 19 2019 he was driving to work when he came upon a woman lying unresponsive on the road and immediately commenced CPR. It was the second time he had saved the life of a member of the public. Afterwards, concerned he would be late for parade, he drove home, swapped his car for a motorcycle – and still made it on time.
The award for Respect was given to Corporal John ‘Taffy’ Murphy of the Defence Forces HQ. Commandant Michael Cullen, from Naas, Co Kildare and recently returned from Western Sahara, was honoured for Integrity. Naval Petty Officer Daire Mulvenny from Whitehall in Dublin was honoured for his Physical Courage, after rescuing a teenage boy from drowning on a hot summer’s day in July 2019 in Ballincollig Regional Park.
