County waterways positive for blue-green algae By Sue Sitter - | Jul 24, 2021 Sue Sitter/PCT Waterfowl gather on a small area lake shrunken in size even more by exceptional drought in Pierce County. Two Pierce County lakes have tested positive for toxic blue-green algae, and officials with the North Dakota State University Extension are on the lookout for more. Tests by the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality on Buffalo Lake and Antelope Lake, located in southern Pierce County, turned up positive for suspected blue-green algae, prompting advisories issued and posted by the agency. According to information published by the DEQ, the algae produces toxins harmful to people and animals.

Engineer Jim Olson of Grand Forks firm AE2S updated the council on sewer and water infrastructure proposed for a section of town near 2 12 Avenue and Sixth Street Southeast. He also spoke on pipe problems near the Rugby Recreation complex and three city buildings.

Ranchers and farmers struggling with exceptional drought conditions filled a banquet room at Rugby’s Coffee Cottage June 17, sharing their stories with Gov. Doug Burgum and North Dakota water and ag officials. The standing-room-only crowd spilled out into the hallway and parking lot of the restaurant as they listened to information on state programs that might help solve at least some of their problems. Most in the crowd said they owned livestock, while a few said they farmed in the area.
