A former Polk County Jail detention officer was awarded $1.75 million Tuesday when a jury ruled the county and its risk manager breached their fiduciary duty and committed fraud.
Brent Lozano was a detention officer at the Polk County Jail from 2001 until he was fired in April 2018 after failing to show up for work. Lozano s attorney, Matthew Sahag, said Lozano seriously damaged tendons in his left ankle when he tried to restrain an incarcerated individual in March 2016. In a lawsuit, Sahag argued that Lozano was dismissed after having a request for a desk job denied when he tried to return to work in 2018.
