U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado will serve as New York’s next lieutenant governor.

Democratic New York Rep. Antonio Delgado is leaving Congress to serve as his state's lieutenant governor, Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday.

The legislation marks a major change to state election law that will enable Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, to untether herself from a running mate currently under federal indictment.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul is tapping Congressman Antonio Delgado as her new lieutenant governor. Delgado is a fellow Democrat from New York’s swing 19th district. He was first elected to the Hudson Valley seat in 2018.

Gov. Kathy Hochul chose a new running mate just hours after the state legislature modified New Yorks rules to restrict who can appear on the ballot.
