No cookie-cutter show: Personal stories shape Syracuse Stage’s ‘Home for the Holidays’ (Review)

In story and song we’re told “there’s no place like” it, but for many in Covid America, this will be the first season they’re unable to return “home for the holidays.” But here’s the rub: for essential workers and creatives like actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and other performers home for the holidays has rarely been an option, the former providing necessary services, the latter entertaining us during this most wonderful time of the year.
“Home for the Holidays” is Syracuse Stage’s winter-white rabbit pulled out of the proverbial hat, a brave Mickey Rooney-esque “kids, let’s put on a show!” song-and-dance production.
