BRICS countries include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, will participate in the virtual meeting, at the end of which leaders are expected to adopt a Joint Statement on the situation in the Middle East with particular reference to Gaza, the South African Foreign Ministry statement said.

South Africa will Tuesday host a virtual summit of the BRICS group of nations, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, to discuss the Israel-Hamas war, Pretoria and Moscow said Monday.

China has reaffirmed its support for new countries joining the BRICS grouping of developing nations, despite Argentinas likely next foreign minister stating that her country would no longer join the group. Argentina was among six countries invited to become new members at a summit in South Africa in August. China and Russia are pushing for the expansion of the BRICS grouping as they seek to counter Western economic dominance.

This will be first BRICS meet since the Summit in August that resulted in expansion of the group. The meeting has been scheduled on eve of G20 summit on Wednesday under Indian presidency.

Officials meeting with China are from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Palestinian authorities and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation
