The Defense Department will deny a plea from Navy Lt. Ridge Alkonis to extend his pay and allowances while he serves a three-year prison sentence in Japan, according to U.S. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah on Thursday.
Lt. Ridge Alkonis has been imprisoned in Japan since May 2021 after he suffered a medical emergency and slammed into parked cars, killing two Japanese residents.
Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with the Japanese prime minister last month about a U.S. naval officer serving a three-year prison term in Japan, a White House official said.
