If you haven’t had a good laugh, you have not been with him. And anyone who knows him knows I’m not joking. The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has the rare gift of humour. Not the run-of-the-mill kind that forces a courteous half-smile. It’s the kind that extracts the prey while putting the cat completely at ease; it just cracks your rib.

It is true that the hallmark of great men is how they effortlessly impact the lives of people they meet, in extraordinary ways. I am one of those impacted by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah. As such, it is an incredible honour for me to pay tribute to this great man. I count myself privileged to celebrate the man, the blessings of his priesthood, the benefit of his kindness , and his boundless passion for justice and a better society.

Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese who turns 70 tomorrow, August 31, deserves celebration for his service to church, community, nation, and humanity, for his achievements as a true citizen who has used his priestly circumstances, boundless energy and prodigious intellect to promote the causes of justice and the common good. He stands shoulders above many of his contemporaries in his many engagements in the last four decades.
