Construction has started on a 34-story luxury tower in Fort Lauderdale's state courthouse district. The project by a firm led by Russian developer Vladislav Dorinin is the opening segment of a three-block enclave of high-end residential projects not far from a new federal courthouse that is also under development.
The Fort Lauderdale city commission approved design waivers that will allow Broward Crossing, the proposed 546-foot mixed-use tower at 300 West Broward Boulevard, to proceed toward construction. The design deviated from city architectural requirements, and the project is a joint venture of Aimco of Denver and the Kushner companies of New York.
A 36-floor, 364-foot tower is planned west of the Florida East Coast Railway tracks near the Brightline train station in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The project is the latest in high rises earmarked for the Broward Boulevard area in the station's neighborhood.
Critics worry a new high-rise, which would be Fort Lauderdale's tallest and have close to 1,000 apartments, will only add to the gridlock. But fans are already raving about the tower’s futuristic design.
