20th January 2021 Dixons Carphone saw like-for-like sales in its core electricals unit grow 11% over the 10 weeks to 9 January as locked-down European consumers ordered big-screen TVs, food preparation appliances, health & beauty gadgets, and computer & gaming products. Despite its stores being closed during lockdowns, like-for-like sales in its UK & Ireland division climbed 8%. This was driven by online sales which surged up 121%. International like-for-likes rose by 14% following strong sales growth of 19% in the company’s Nordic operation. However, sales in Greece declined by 13% after trading was impacted by a national lockdown. Online sales soar as Dixons Carphone covers wounds of festive store closures British retailer Dixons Carphone has seen sales rocket during Christmas as online growth of 121 per cent balanced out store closures. Like-for-like electrical sales increased 11 per cent over the festive period as shares rose by 2.8 per cent, the group announced on Wednesday. Dixons Carphone, who trade as Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse in the UK, forecast full year profits in line with market expectations despite high street closures. The group insists that there is still life in in-store sales once Covid-19 restrictions are eased, despite 40 per cent of customers now choosing to shop online.

The company also said it would appoint Bruce Marsh as chief financial officer from 12 July 2021. Marsh had been Finance Director, UK and Ireland, at Tesco plc since 2015. For 10 weeks ended 9 January 2021, electricals like-for-like revenue grew 11%, driven by sales of large screen TVs, smart tech and all areas of computing & gaming. UK & Ireland electricals like-for-like revenue grew 8% as online growth was 121% and the division increased market share by 6%.
