We all know those little robots that vacuum the house, at least from an advertising spot. What would it be like if there were little robots that can measure the wear on car tires in the time it takes to fuel your vehicle? A group of students asked themselves this question, and went on to create just such a robot.
Ionut Otelea is a member of the project team, whose members are students at the Computer and Automation School with the Bucharest Polytechnic University. He told us the story of the project:
“This is a project to create an autonomous robot. It is placed in gas stations, and when we go there to fuel our vehicle, the little robot goes underneath the car, scanning each rubber tire. It is meant to determine how worn out the tires are. By tire wear we mean the depth of the grooves on them, and by measuring this depth we can determine whether or not we can still use our tires, or if we need to replace them.”
