five people died on the street. another died later in hospital. more than two dozen others were treated for gunshot wounds. those taken to hospital range in age from 8 to 85. and most have since been released. police say they believe robert crimo iii opened fire from the rooftop of a building along the parade route. they say they recovered firearm evidence from the scene. crimo was arrested a few hours later not far away, in lake forest, illinois. he led police on a brief chase, but it was eventually taken into custody. this individual is believed to have been responsible for what happened and the investigation will continue. charges have not been approved yet at this time and we re a long way from that. there s still a long investigation and there are a lot of efforts that are going to continue tonight. we have more now from cnn s adrienne bros does. reporter: investigators say it was a north chicago police officer who found that 22-year-old investigators believe who

of the shooting ethan crumbley s teacher took a picture of a drawing he d done. it apparently showed a bull let, a gun, a person who was bleeding and shot twice, and beneath that picture was a laughing morning joe. the school says it was reported to counselors and crumbley told them it was part of a video game he was designing. so the school called his parents. they told them to put him in counseling within 48 hours. then school officials say the parents refused to take their son home. counselors determined he was not a threat. they send him back to class hours before he s accused of killing four students. the oxford community school superintendent said saturday in a letter, quote, given the fact that the child had no prior disciplinary infractions, the decision was made he would be returned to the classroom rather than sent home to an empty house. potential liability here for school officials? yeah.
you know, craig, the benefit of hindsight is 20/20. let s be clear. if you re in the moment, what are you dealing with? what troubles me the most about the potential liability and exposure for the school officials is the following. that drawing that was done by ethan crumbley was not the first indication to school officials that there could be something wrong in terms of harm and potentially harm to not only crumbley himself but to fellow classmates and school admin industry or thes. within 24 to 36 hours prior, he was searching for ammunition and it was brought to the parent s attention. i think that s going to be the biggest issue for the school itself. i know that the superintendent has reached out and indicated they re going to bring a third party in for the investigation. that s the proper thing to do, but when it comes to the fact that the school officials could have searched the kid, could have looked in his backpack, could have looked in his locker c we don t know from law enfo
rounds and what we re suspecting live rounds. a bullet was found in the director s shoulder that was recovered in the hospital. we know it was a led projectile. it s to be determined by the ballistic analysis by the fbi crime lab what the weight of the bull let is. maybe whether or not it was fired from that actual firearm. it will be the riflings and things tested and compared. so there s a lot of testing that needs to be done to ensure that that projectile left that firearm. that s what we suspect. sheriff, as a man that pulled the trigger and a producer on the movie, does alex baldwin face the potential of criminal charges? that may be a question better answered by the district attorney. all options are on the table at this point. i m not commenting on charges, whether they ll be filed or not
