Starling: Burlington City Council should hold itself accountable

“That causes division and hardship, Starling said. We re trying to bring unity. During the April 6 work session, Critser stated he worked three jobs and had not received any handouts. Starling alleged this was a way of potentially implying that Black people were not willing to work. Starling further stated this comment was particularly concerning from his viewpoint because Black Americans have always worked, and for most of America’s history that work had been by force due to slavery. Rinker previously said he felt the apology given by Walsh on Jan. 9 should suffice for the Black community. Starling insisted such a determination being made by a white council member about what should be sufficient for the Black community means very little when Rinker was not affected by the comments.

Rob Brown, president of the BLC, said it is time city council members make clear where they stand on continuing business with Farmers and Merchants Bank and Trust. What we are asking to be put on the agenda, said Brown. Harris, a daughter of immigrants, is of both African and Asian descent.

Neafie found additional revenue for city, saw projects through to completion

The Hawk Eye At the corner of Sixth and Jefferson streets, the statue celebrating Nancy Neafie watches over historical downtown Burlington.  The bronze statue stands 7 feet tall, wearing an Oriental-style scholar s robe, its left hand holding a book as if saluting the knowledge contained on its pages  a fitting tribute to the scholar and teacher who served as Burlington s first and only female mayor. She was a very empowered female, Sarah Hazell said from the office of Hazell Agencies-Insurance, where she works alongside several family members, including her father, Scott Hazell, and niece, Laura Hazell.  I wouldn t say strong, I would say empowered, because to me, empowerment embodies strength, too, and knowledge, and she definitely represented both of those things. And I also think that she was someone who, she really triumphed the female aspect of women s rights.
