Bernard Shaw became the chief anchor of the major news network in 1980 when it launched and for the next two-decades would build an award-winning career in broadcast journalism.

Former CNN anchor Bernard Shaw died Wednesday at a Washington, DC, hospital of pneumonia unrelated to Covid-19, Shaws family announced Thursday. Shaw was 82.

Bernard Shaw was CNN’s first chief anchor and was with the network when it launched on June 1, 1980. He retired from CNN after more than 20 years on February 28, 2001.

Shaw was the first anchor for the network when it was launched on June 1, 1980, and remained with the network for over 20 years before retiring.

He was best known for leading the network's anchor desk for 20 years; Shaw led a venerable career in journalism.
