Six people have been arrested in Johannesburg in the past 24 hours for cable theft and vandalism.

Infrastructure and environment services MMC in Joburg Jack Sekwaila said that the metro would be taking action against scrapyards as they were contributing to the scourge of cable theft.

Cable theft and vandalism at its substations regularly plagued the utility, disrupting its ability to supply power to already powerless residents.

One of the utilitys solutions is to replace the underground electricity network with overhead lines.

This follows an attempted cable theft that caused an explosion at the substation.

Last week, the schools governing body spoke to Eyewitness News about the dangers facing the children with the cables that were left exposed, saying that they were at risk of electrocution.

The city said that the only way to curb the theft of cables was to have a team of officials specifically dealing with the matter.

Goede Hoop Primary Schools playground was dug up on Wednesday night and the buried electricity cables were stolen from the premises. Its believed that the cable thieves who dug up cables along Goedehoop Avenue in Reiger Park last month were responsible for Wednesday nights incident. The residents said cable theft had become life-threatening as it put the lives of children in danger.
