Perseverance drilled its first sample-collecting hole on Friday (Aug. 6), but data beamed back to Earth by the rover indicate that no Mars rock or dirt made it into the sampling tube.

NASA's Perseverance rover fails in first attempt to collect rock samples on Mars - The Perseverance mission is assembling a response team to analyse the data and to ascertain when to schedule the next sample collection attempt.

NASA says the sampling failure likely is due to the nature of the targeted rock, not a hardware problem.
