Up, but everyone in our two cars. i went to the other car to make sure that assess the situation. everyone in my cafe car was okay, but the next one over, that was where the one guy was really beat up. so i made my way over there and banged up and bleeding and couldn t move his leg and he was in not good shape. i don t know that there was going to be personnel here in second. i told the one guy to sit with him and hold him hand and i went back and checked on the track behind the cafe car to make sure make sure she was okay and we started people on their heads and some other things. you ve been listening to
Pennsylvania congressman patrick murphy capturing the train s cafe car turned on its side and nbc news producer janelle richards. this morning, the worst amtrak train accident in more than a decade and it s still too early to know what happened and why. and as we ve been telling you, amtrak train 188 was bound for new york. new york mayor bill de blasio reacted on morning joe today. i have 160 bridges in new york city that are over 100 years old. we have the challenge everyday of just keeping the basics together. our subway system had a day last year where we got six million riders in a single day. this country has to invest in infrastructure the way other countries do. we put 1.77% in our infrastructure. china puts 9%. it s no wonder we re being beat economically in many areas of competition because other parts of the world are investing in
Side. one crushed and shredded. according to patrick murphy who was in the cafe car, the scene was so bloody and chaotic, survivors didn t care about anyone else. stepping over other people to save themselves. still the congressman says he and others tried to help the injured. there was a lot of blood and folks got banged up got hurt bad. well i was in the washer side of the car, i flew to the other side landed on my head. i could see the blood on people s faces, they can t move. and their knees were out. a lot of people were just in shock. they couldn t believe what was happening. they were just crying and like didn t know what to say. one passenger says he helped victims down from luggage racks where they landed when violently thrown. survivors describe clawing their way through windows to get to safety but even getting outside sparked new fears when rescuers warned them to run in case another came speeding around the bend. we have live team fox coverage.
In that cafe cart had blood on them and had it from other people, from my baby. so i was just making sure that those who were banged up just put pressure on the wound to make sure they didn t lose so much blood. we ve learned from patrick murphy s stunning eyewitness accounts for the experience of being in that cafe car and being on that train, we learned live here on the air from patrick that senator tom carper of delaware was on that train and that he had disembark barked of course, in wilmington delaware before this crash and just about six minutes ago, senator carper tweeted, i am grateful to be home safe and sound in wilmington and my heart goes out to everyone involved in the crash on amtrak 188 tonight. we re joined now by nbc news
Happened in an instant. what they want to try and figure out is was there anything that might have led up to this that they might be able to use as they try to piece together what happened here and also try to prevent this from happening again. we talked to people who were on this train, including one of our own nbc news producers, janelle richards who told me that it was a very normal train ride until suddenly it wasn t and she found herself being thrown out of her seat and trying to find a way out of that train. i talked to former congressman patrick murphy who said pretty much the same thing, he had taken that train because he wanted to get home to see his two young children so he could wish them a good night and luckily he was able to do that. he will join us a little bit later, as well as one of the images that he took from the cafe car, the area where many people stop to eat and kind of hang out on the train, his picture was on the front page of the new york times.
