Snake Bytes 4/9: ROCKED in Colorado So are the fans. It seems to me that MadBum has not much left in the tank and that any wrinkles he and the team added to his repertoire this spring have been ironed out by opponents. Caleb Smith has been demoted to the pen, likely for a couple reasons: He has sucked, the bullpen was taxed the night before his demotion, and Widener is now the ACE of the squad. Haffey/Getty Images) PHOENIX – In a way, it seems all too familiar. For the second straight year, the Arizona Diamondbacks are 1-3 after opening the season against the San Diego Padres. The 2020 season’s rough beginning was an unfortunate precursor for what was to come. Arizona hovered around the bottom tier of MLB the rest ...

April 5, 2021 It’s the first full FAAB period for the NFBC Main event and it’s time to see who owners have soured on. Two trends I saw were managers dumping a ton of injured or demoted players. Also, bullpen arms were dropped for as situations clear up. For this analysis, I use the NFBC Main Event because of the number of identical leagues. Additionally, the managers stay engaged longer on the whole since each spent $1700 per team. I tried to find that sweet spot between obvious and bizarre...

Finding an answer required several steps. Let’s look at the last two seasons (2019 and 2020) for each pitcher in the 2021 rotation. One caveat is that this season’s starters will include additional pitchers. Let’s limit some sources of variability that could add noise to the answer. To reduce...

A bigger concern was whether Arizona would lose first baseman Christian Walker for any length of time.
