After standing on the podium five times in the past two seasons, Sydney Morris made it to the top.
Morris ended her senior season with the Calvary Lutheran Lady Lions without placing anywhere but first in the shot put when she heaved a school-record 41 feet, 1 inch on her sixth throw to claim the title Friday at the Class 1 state track and field championships at Adkins Stadium. Morris said her switch to a rotation throw before her junior year made the difference as she become more comfortable as a senior.
The South Callaway Lady Bulldogs waited a long time to get their first victory of the season, but they did the little things Tuesday night to finally get in the win column.
The Calvary Lutheran Lady Lions were having flashbacks to last year’s district tournament. Calvary opened the 2021-22 postseason against the Climax Springs Lady Cougars in a Class 1 District 8 contest, dropping an 87-51 decision. “They had a girl who shot all kinds of stuff on us in districts,” Calvary coach Ty Morris said. “She graduated, we thought we might get a little break.” Nope. The Lady Cougars hit their first three 3-point attempts Thursday night on their way to a 55-37 victory against the Lady Lions at Calvary Lutheran High School.
Sydney Morris and Maddy Sprengel combined to score 58 points Saturday, leading the Calvary Lutheran Lady Lions to a 65-43 win against the Rolla HomeSchool Royals.
