Volunteers from New Virginia Majority have spent the past month walking students home from bus stops in the St. Paul’s community as part of a pilot program to curb gun violence in the area after parents reported hearing gunfire between 3 and 5 p.m. — around the same time children are returning home from school.

The shooting happened at about 1:15 a.m. Saturday at the Calvert Square public housing community, near the intersection of Church Street and Virginia Beach Boulevard.

Police in Norfolk say a man and woman were shot on Bagnall Road early Saturday morning. The female victim did not survive.
