Take advantage of the long weekend by heading to one of the many tree lightings, winter festivals, craft fairs, lights shows or holiday productions happening across the suburbs.

Many suburban communities kick off the holiday season with tree lighting ceremonies. Some of these events have grown into mini-festivals complete with caroling, Santa visits, sleigh rides and more.

Get into the spirit of the season at Chicago Botanic Gardens Lightscape, Light Up the Park in Rosemont, Morton Arboretums Illumination, and at one of the many tree lightings, festivals and seasonal productions happening throughout the area.

Its prime time for Oktoberfests in the suburbs. Plus, theres fun to be had at Huntley Fall Fest, Fall on the Farm at Lambs Farm, Big Timber Brew Fest, Johnny Appleseed Festival, Berwyn Blues Festival and many more.

Get out and have some fun this week at festivals including Aurora Fiestas Patrias, Harvest Fest, Grayslake Craft Beer Festival, Six Flags Great America Fright Fest and much more.

This is the weekend that Oktoberfests really get going across the suburbs. So, dress up in your best lederhosen or dirndl and get ready to raise a beer and dance the polka at a local fest.

Experience daily live entertainment, including strolling German "oompah" entertainers, and sample a selection of German beers and food under the big tent at the 10th annual Glendale Heights Oktoberfest on Sept. 15-25.

From Elgin Fringe Festival to St. Charles Jazz Weekend to Platzkonzert Germanfest in Hoffman Estates to Lake Zurichs Rock the Block to Winfield Good Old Days, there are a lot of options to keep you busy this weekend.

The days may be getting shorter, but theres still plenty of summer left and a load of festivals to enjoy.

Suburban Indian Americans will mark Indias 75th Independence Day with a celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Peterson Park, 16652 N. Buffalo Grove Road in Lincolnshire.
