KABUL (Pajhwok): Military bases vacated by foreign troops will be handed over to Afghan forces by the end of the current week, says the acting defence minister.
Gen. Yasin Zia, speaking to journalists here on Saturday, confirmed US and NATO forces had practically embarked on the withdrawal operation.
He said; “The withdrawal of foreign forces has practically begun. The bases where logistics issues have been addressed will be handed to Afghan forces by the end of this week.’’
The last batch of international troops would leave Camp Shorab in southern Helmand province on Sunday, the acting minister added.
Foreign Forces Have Started Withdrawal: Gen. Zia
The acting minister of defense, Gen. Yasin Zia, at a press briefing on Saturday said that the US and NATO forces have started their withdrawal from the country – as the May 1 deadline agreed in Doha deal has approached.
“The withdrawal of foreign forces has practically started,” he said. “They will hand over the areas where their logistics issues have been addressed will be handed (to Afghan forces) by the end of this week,” Zia said.
He said that the US and NATO forces will first leave other bases and will be transferred to Bagram and from there they will leave abroad.
